Reflections on hiking the AT through Virginia

Reflections on hiking the AT through Virginia

Many hikers keep a journal of their journey. I take pictures and write blogs, most of which are never published. As a guest on the “Jester” Section Hiker Podcast, I was asked to read a journal entry and I chose this blog to share with the listeners.

After our hike, we stopped to visit the uncle for After our hike, we stopped to visit the uncle for whom we care. Each resident of the senior center has a Q&A posted in a shadowbox outside the room. Today, I wandered the halls reading their advice. This one made my heart hurt. It is very good advice! #lifeisshort

Today’s 9+ mile trail walk was interesting. No b Today’s 9+ mile trail walk was interesting. No backpacks or doggie saddlebags. After a late Saturday night, I wanted to sleep in. That meant I couldn’t drive 2 hours to my planned destination, hike 15 and be out by dark. So we decided to walk the trails around a local lake. I was surprised by the many paths that intersected our route. It was a nice trail with many lake views. But it also had views and the accompanying noise of our interstate. We followed the trail under I83 on 2 occasions. The one tunnel was low and we had to squat to walk without banging our heads. The second was high but flooded with shin high water, so our last few miles were completed with soppy feet. Luckily we had mild 45 degree weather so the wet was tolerable. I enjoyed the walk and will absolutely repeat again.

Christmas is a magical time for my family. Not onl Christmas is a magical time for my family. Not only is it an important Christian holiday, it is a time of tradition. We put up 8 decorated live trees, each with a different theme. My favorite is our travel tree that highlights great memories of worldwide adventures. Each ornament represents a magnificent story. 🧳

The striped handbag reminds me of when my oldest daughter, at age 12, wanted to buy a knockoff designer bag in Chinatown in Manhattan. As a policeman neared the shop, the owner shoved my girl into a hidden closet in the back of her store 😂.

The fashionable heron represents an enormous bird that visited our Ft Lauderdale motel after our kids left each morning for swim practice in the International Hall of Fame Pool. They never saw the pseudo pterodactyl, and believed we made up the tale. 🕊🏊‍♂️

My youngest daughter, now a professional dancer, performed in the Miss America parade, hence the gaudy high heeled shoe.👠

The sweet scented swirled soap takes me back to the historic inn in the middle of Missouri. I’m transported to the tiled lobby, ready to step onto the grand staircase to my room, huge antique key in my hand. 🏠

The Iowa state stained glass was purchase at the State Fair, after my husband had a beer with Jeb Bush and they chatted about their mothers. 🍺

The wine barrel and various corks tell me that I visit Napa too frequently and belong to too many wine clubs 🍷

The red townie bike takes me to our vacation home in Colorado; the cabins to the many hikes in the Rocky Mountains. 🏔🚲.

Wooden shoes, Austrian bell, Parisian Santa, German nutcracker, a Canadian lighthouse and a British crown - reminders of visits abroad. .

The many National Park and hiking ornaments take me to trails and mountains where I long to return. 🥾

The Travel Tree takes the longest to decorate and even longer to undecorate, because I daydream as I wrap each decoration for storage. .

Oh, how I love adventure. .
